Research: The Last Exorcism

THE LAST EXORCISM

The trailer begins with a voice over; it is more like a commentator rather than a narrator as it is giving you information rather than telling the story. Dates are shown telling the audience when the event occurred, where it happened along side with who was involved with it.
The first several clips show a normal typical suburban family from Louisiana who have just lost their wife/mother. The quote “Reverend Cotton Marcus has performed over 47 exorcisms… This will be his last” this quote is giving an invite to the audience to allow themselves to become more involved in the trailer. It makes them think “what’s going to happen next?” “Why is it going to happen?” “How can it be stopped?” etc. The first glimpse of the first clip is grainy and flickery, like an old homemade video. The firs few clip are empty, as in there isn’t much happening there are no people or a lot of movement.
As the man drives through the area he is told to turn around and go home. It is intriguing as to why he has asked him to do so, also giving the audience another reason to continue to keep watching. The man then throws something at the man driving the car, this is when the music and sounds start to become tense and sharp.

The sounds used starts off very subtle, almost as though it is a heartbeat. The pace and music doesn’t start up until after the girl becomes possessed then there if a black out to create tension. After the black outs there is always a loud sound to give the frightening atmosphere and allows bursts of horror and shock. Pace speeds up very quickly this introduces the many screams which occur and shouting. Heavy breathing nearer the end of the trailer makes the audience believe there is something lurking around, we already know there was something but now it becomes more realistic in an unnatural way.
Natural shots swiftly change into red black and white; this is a continuous theme throughout the trailer. This is because these colours are the representation of The Last Exorcism.

There are several close ups to show expressions and emotions. One of the first close ups is of the girl when she is explaining the relationship between her and her mother and she starts to cry. This is an important shot as we now know why this is relevant as later on the trailer she is the one bin used to find out about her mothers death. There is a close up shot of the girls face just before she is exorcised, she looks scared and frightened then there is an upper body shot, then back to a close up shot of hr holding her fathers hand.
Later on in the trailer there is a close up shot of the girl when she is possessed but the colours have been changed from natural to black, red and white.
We get a close up of the cat but at the same time a POV shot as she approaches the cat.
There are a lot of close up shots of the girl when she is possessed in red black and white.
