Research: Horror Genre&Genre Cycles

RESEARCH ON HORROR GENRE & GENRE CYCLES

Thriller is a genre that uses suspense, excitement and tension as it main elements to make it a successful genre. The main subgenres of thrillers are: mystery, crime and psychological thrillers. They are most known for the atmosphere they create, menace, violence, crime and murder with it all being shown in a dark, corrupt and dangerous setting. Thriller use lots of literary devices like red herrings and cliff hangers as well as promoting a mood such as high level of anticipation, adrenaline rush, uncertainty and anxiety.

Horror genre films are movies that try to unsettle and use the emotions of fear, disgust and horror against the viewer. They also use jump scenes to continue to scary and frighten as well as startling them. Common horror films use viewer’s nightmares, fears and the terror of the unknown in films. Horror films are based around a monster or creature.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horror_film

Example of this genre:

Psycho made in 1960 is an American film directed by Alfred Hitchcock. This was one of the first films that had the genre thriller as well as being one of the first films that had a monster or create who was human where as all films before this was an unhuman character.

Genre Cycles

Genre cycles are when a new genre is created and it begins to grow and the iconography and repertoire of elements gradually begin to become known to audiences. As the audience begin to get to know the genre and its characteristic audiences can easily guess what will happen in a film and the film gradually gets adapted and changes and then you come back to the start of a cycle as someone creates a film which is different.

Research: Devil

DEVIL

Devil release September 2010, is a supernatural thriller directed by John Eric Dowie. It has a very simple plot of 5 strangers trapped in a lift; after many strange and terrifying happenings they realise one of the people trapped inside is the devil in a human form.

The trailer contains all the typical thriller elements such as the tension and suspense which is done through the music which starts normal typical music but has creepiness about it, and becomes creepier as it goes along and you find out more information.

The way they edited the different clips together and use effects such as fades to black; an example of this is when they show the 5 characters that end up in the lift together they show the character in an average day-to-day situation and then fade to black then show another character, this shows they are going to be important. The end of the trailer is a lot quicker moving and is more action packed compared to the first half of the trailer where it shows more longer and tells the story more clips as well as having more speech in these clips; compared to the end where it is a lot quicker moving and no text just music. The scenes where the TV comes on and off you want to know how this is happening as the people in the scene look just as confused and shocked as the viewer feels.

The trailer also has a lot of text which starts to tell the story this makes you want to know what happens after the events you have seen in the clips. The text at the start of the trailer has a dragging effect and is on the city upside down which is all strange. You know this film has a scary element and of evil due to the writing having a black background and red writing when it shows the text towards the end.

The end section of the trailer also shows different characters in different situations this is another enigma they are using to make people want to watch. When they end the lift the 5 characters stand in a format and it is odd as how the girl who is standing in the middle happens to be the person who the action seems to evolve around.

Just after you see the first initial crash there is a black out with just speaking and you wonder what has happened and what will follow. Towards the end of the film the music changes and is a lot more tension building and the clips start being slower and the tension starts to build before speeding up.

As well as the above representing the genre and having the typical things we would expect in this type of film; these elements also attract the audience as they want the questions answered and what to know how it all occurred and what the out come is.

Research: Saw 3D

SAW 3D

Saw 3D is released on the 29th October 2010, it is directed by Kevin Greutert who also directed Saw, Saw 2 and Saw 3. He also directed the well known film Donnie Darko. The Saw films have a horror mystery genre as there is a lot of tension of how they will be killed and if they will be killed. The film has been rated as an 18 in the UK.

There are 4 different posters advertising the film each of them including different taglines which are:
1. The Traps Come Alive
2. In Mind-Blowing 3D
3. In Heart-Pounding 3D
4. In eye-popping 3D

The story line of the Saw films are about a man called John who speaks to the hostages through a puppet who appears on a screen through a video take or audio, where they have been captured called Jigsaw.

The survivors from previous Saw films gather to seek advice from a self-help guru and also a survivor, Bobby Dagen whose dark secrets are revealed creating new terror within the group causing them all sorts of trouble.
The trailer attracts the audience as it gets the audience’s attention by capturing the main part of different scenes of the characters being chained up etc building the tension of what will happen next. The shots end when the traps set for the characters are activated, questioning whether or not they make it out alive and quickly moving onto the next shot so it is fast and snappy.
The use of the crowd building around the glass building at the beginning of the trailer could be metaphorically saying that the film is eye catching and there will be big audiences to see this film.

The music starts of with gonging sound of a clock. Sound affects start off slowly then when captives are shown it picks up pace, sharp pounding sounds, music becomes more intense nearer the end then slows down at the end. Pace starts to pick up half way through the trailer when all the action begins to happen. The narrative involves you within the story.

Long shots start off the trailer but then when two characters chained up are shown the pace quickens. The shots are longer until something begins to happen to the characters, then the pace quickens once again.
Flash shots are mainly used in the trailer to show the distress of the characters in the scenes.
There is a lot rapid editing within the trailer which lets the viewer catch a lot of the action and understand what the film is about. This creates an increasing heart rate therefore a greater feeling of excitement.

The colours used in the trailer represent the film as there are dark colours used to show the uneasiness of the film. It causes anxiety on the audience as they don’t know what will happen.
The excitement starts as soon as there first main characters are shown strapped to the blades as it motivates the viewer to continue to watch to see what may happen next.

The trailer attracts the audience as it catches their attention from start to finish. The narrative and text add to the fear. The target audience is for people who have enjoyed watching the previous Saw films and people who enjoy scary, horror, thriller, jerky and gory films.
The clips used are typical of this particular trailer, the use of blades, blood, gore, chains, rusty metal etc. the viewer knows that it will be a scary trailer from the music, lighting as all scenes are in darkness apart from the first scene as it is in daylight. It is as though the trailer works its way through the day, Sunlight to night time.

Research: Case 39

CASE 39

Case 39 is a 2009 horror film directed by Christian Alvart and stars RenĂ©e Zellweger, Jodelle Ferland, and Ian McShane. The film was shot in Vancouver in late 2006. The film is about a socila worker Emily Jenkins that is assigned to investigate the family of 10 year old Lilith Sullivan as her grades have dropped and an emotional rift between her parents has slowly emerged. Lilith is the sent to a children’s home, when Emily Jenkins fears that Lilith is being abused were confirmed when they attempted to roast Lilith the oven, the parents were taken to a mental asylum

The way that the film interprets the horror genre, is by the use of music, lighting and shots. By the variety of interpretations used, this then attracts an audience.

The use of music within the trailer is very dark and mysterious giving a very scary feel to the whole trailer. It has an initial use of percussion used to create a heartbeat with the use of string instruments underneath creating tension. It also makes you jump with the use of loud bangs when the trailer speeds up and when the trailer calms down and things seem to settle the use of a piano is used which also calms our mood as well as the mood in the trailer.

The lighting in this trailer is at times very light involving day light or well lit offices etc and where the trailer becomes scary the lighting is very dark and gloomy involving forced lighting from , giving a very uneasy feel to the trailer, however there is natural light involved in the shots from the sun through windows etc.

There are many shots used in the trailer, mainly wide shots and a lot of tight shots involving just the head of head and shoulders rarely whole body shots. Between most shots it fades to black, so the shots are a montage of shots that are unrelated that tell a story between the black fades that dissolve and like the trailer together.

This shot relates back to Un Chien Andolou 1929 – Brunel and Dali, involving ants which are a typical shots to Un Chien Andolou.

The target audience for this film is mainly aimed at adults as the storyline can only be fully understood by those with adult sensibilities. It has a female heroine and the storyline involves care of a young girl suggesting that maybe people that are involved in care would want to watch the film.

The film was classified at a certificate 12, so therefore may appeal to a wider audience than the usual horror audience because it would obviously involve limits to the horror that will be shown.

Research: The Last Exorcism

THE LAST EXORCISM

The trailer begins with a voice over; it is more like a commentator rather than a narrator as it is giving you information rather than telling the story. Dates are shown telling the audience when the event occurred, where it happened along side with who was involved with it.
The first several clips show a normal typical suburban family from Louisiana who have just lost their wife/mother. The quote “Reverend Cotton Marcus has performed over 47 exorcisms… This will be his last” this quote is giving an invite to the audience to allow themselves to become more involved in the trailer. It makes them think “what’s going to happen next?” “Why is it going to happen?” “How can it be stopped?” etc. The first glimpse of the first clip is grainy and flickery, like an old homemade video. The firs few clip are empty, as in there isn’t much happening there are no people or a lot of movement.
As the man drives through the area he is told to turn around and go home. It is intriguing as to why he has asked him to do so, also giving the audience another reason to continue to keep watching. The man then throws something at the man driving the car, this is when the music and sounds start to become tense and sharp.

The sounds used starts off very subtle, almost as though it is a heartbeat. The pace and music doesn’t start up until after the girl becomes possessed then there if a black out to create tension. After the black outs there is always a loud sound to give the frightening atmosphere and allows bursts of horror and shock. Pace speeds up very quickly this introduces the many screams which occur and shouting. Heavy breathing nearer the end of the trailer makes the audience believe there is something lurking around, we already know there was something but now it becomes more realistic in an unnatural way.
Natural shots swiftly change into red black and white; this is a continuous theme throughout the trailer. This is because these colours are the representation of The Last Exorcism.

There are several close ups to show expressions and emotions. One of the first close ups is of the girl when she is explaining the relationship between her and her mother and she starts to cry. This is an important shot as we now know why this is relevant as later on the trailer she is the one bin used to find out about her mothers death. There is a close up shot of the girls face just before she is exorcised, she looks scared and frightened then there is an upper body shot, then back to a close up shot of hr holding her fathers hand.
Later on in the trailer there is a close up shot of the girl when she is possessed but the colours have been changed from natural to black, red and white.
We get a close up of the cat but at the same time a POV shot as she approaches the cat.
There are a lot of close up shots of the girl when she is possessed in red black and white.

Research: Paranormal Activity 2

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2

Paranormal Activity 2 is a 2010 psychological horror film directed by Tod Williams and written by Michael R. Perry. It is a sequel to the original film, Paranormal Activity, released in 2009.
This film interprets the horror genre, by the use of music or sound, lighting and shots. The trailer is filmed as if it is like a documentary, therefore scarier, as the audience think that is real.
The use of sound within the trailer is very dark and mysterious giving a very scary feel, as the trailer is giving a sense that it is being filmed from a home camera, therefore creating tension. The sounds that are heard are dogs barking, screams and also the noise of the camera coming in and out signal, which creates the tension and eeriness.

The lighting in this trailer is very dark and eerie throughout, having a tint of blue, from the camera. From the beginning the trailer gives a scary feel as throughout the lighting doesn’t change, and remains darks, giving a very uneasy feel to the trailer.

There are mainly establishing shots used within the trailer, showing a shots of rooms, then fading to black and then to another shot of a room. Between most shots it fades to black, so the shots are a series of shots that are unrelated but give the feel of documentary, especially with the use of the time in the corner. However, between the shots in the beginning of the trailer it fades to black, and shows reaction shots of audiences watching the previous film, Paranormal Activity. These reaction shots are shot looking onto the audience whilst they are watching the film, to give this effect the shots are in green, creating a sense again, that it is real.

The film was classified at a certificate 15, so therefore may appeal to a wider audience than the usual horror audience because it would obviously involve limits to the horror that will be shown, due to the age preventing restricted information being able to be shown. The target audience for this film is obviously aimed at 15 year olds therefore the storyline is aimed at being fully understood by those with teenage/adult sensibilities. It has a female as the main character, being possessed.

Classic Hollywood films (Le shot Americaine) remove any idea of mediation, in order to get the audience to suspend their disbelief. Paranormal Activity 2 is shot like a documentary, making the audience watching the trailer, actually have the idea of mediation. Awareness of the camera, throughout the film, by the use of the time in the corner, the quality of the film, in ways such as the camera going in and out of signal and the and the coloring of certain shots, such as blue and green tints – perhaps suggests that webcam’s have been used to create the film as well, reinforces the audience’s belief that what they are watching is actuality.

Research: Evaluation of Films of our Genre

EVALUATION OF FILMS OF OUR GENRE
The Exorcist (1973)
The exorcist was directed by William Friedkin; the film is about an exorcism case, it is dealing with the possession of a young girl and her mother’s desperation in her attempt to get her daughter back.

The main characters, the stock characters in the film is the possessed girl, the mother and the priest who comes to help them and does the exorcism along with another priest who has in the past done many exorcisms.

Close Up shots is a used shot in the film an example of this is the head rotation shot, in this shot you see the girl from the neck upwards and you see her head spin, this is known as one of the well known moments from the exorcist. Another shot that is used is a close up that does straight in a wide shot that pans round to a close up; the example of this is when you see a close up of the mums face that then shows a wide shot of the girl coming down the stairs in the crab and then pans round to a close up of her face. The use of these shots makes us more scared, and jump and bring us into the film.

The Exorcist use music like many horror/thriller films as a way of scaring and making the viewer jump; The Exorcist uses it by having silence then sudden noise or hearing a normal conversation then a scream in a different part of the setting. An example is when the mother is having a conversation with some one else in the house and then you suddenly hear a scream come from upstairs from the possessed girl which makes the viewer jump as it is unexpected.

This film uses binary oppositions as a way to separate the possessed girl to the rest of the household. As the devil gets more into the girl the room becomes freezing and icy this shows a difference compared to the rest of the house which is warm and homely.

All horror films have a monster this is the paradigms of the film, in this film the paradigms is the girl and how she is an ordinary kind family girl who gets possessed by the devil who turns her into this different person and how she is stuck in the body and is being taken over by it. The priest performing the exorcism orders the devil to leave the girl and it does but into the priest who was working with her as a psychiatrist he then kills himself by jumping out of the window this itself is a mystery as it is never concluded because after this incident the girl who was possessed comes back to her old self and doesn’t remember anything that happened and her and her mother leave the town and the house.

• Psycho (1960)
Psycho was made in 1960 and was directed by Alfred Hitchcock and is an American psychological thriller. The film is about a office worker who is fed up of her life, and when is trusted by her employer to take $40,000 she takes the money and is going to start a new life. She stops at ‘The Bates Motel’, the motel is managed by man who is dominated by his dead mother.

The main character in the film is Norman Bates a man who is the villain in the film he is driven mad of jealously when his mother finds another man after his fathers death, he kills both his mother and her lover, he then keeps his mothers corpse and develops dissocialise identity disorder, in where he dresses and thinks he is his mother and is killing people who come to stay in the motel

Close Up shots is a used shot in the film an example of this is when you see the shadowed image of the ‘mother’ holding a knife in the bathroom. This film also uses many mid shots an example of this includes when the women and Norman Bates are at the reception; this also includes and over the shoulder shot of the women looking at Norman. In the trailer there is a shot of the house where it looks like the camera is looking up to the house this creates strangeness around the house and creates questions.

The film psycho has music that was written by Bernard Hermann, is known as for its stabbing strings in the shower scene and the full orchestral score which reflect the urgency of the woman when she escapes.

Binary Oppositions is used in the film to separate different location etc, an example is the Banes house which is always in the dark and looks creepy and haunted and the actually motel which looks more normal.

All horror films have a monster this is the paradigms of the film, in this film the paradigms is Norman Bates and it is how he is an ordinary man who has this disorder which brings him to do all of these terrible things including killing his own mother then dressing up and acting as his mother then killing these people as her as a way to show his jealousy.

• Jeepers Creepers (2001)
Jeepers Creepers was made in 2001 and was directed by Victor Salva. The film is about a brother and sister who are coming home from college and a mysterious driver tries to drive them of the road, then after many mysterious and strange events occurs it becomes known this is an ancient demon known as ‘The Creeper’ which rises every 23rd spring for 23 days to feast on human body parts in which once it is eaten becomes part of his body.

The main characters are the brother and sister, Darry and Trish and the Creeper himself who is hunting on the siblings.

This film uses lots of different shots, as a lot of the film is done or is evolving around the car a lot of the shots are done from the point of view of the siblings looking out the car window as they drive along; an example is when they seeing ‘The Creeper’ putting sheets with what they thing are bodies inside down a shoot, you are panning across as if you are looking out the window and it has a wide shot. The film also uses lots of reaction shots of the siblings to show the reaction to all the events they come across.

Binary oppositions are used in this film by the fact ‘The Creeper’ is always in the dark and wears black clothing and is always hiding and comes across mysterious compared to the siblings who are wearing light clothing and the emotions are shown as the events occurs.

All horror films have a monster this is the paradigms of the film, in this film the paradigms is ‘The Creeper’ as the mysterious surrounds him and he keeps appearing out of know where and creates questions wherever he goes. As the film continues the brother and sister meet people who keep giving them information about the mysterious creature and more events occur.

• Paranormal Activity (2007)
Paranormal Activity was made in 2007 and was directed by Oren Peli. The film is done as a documentary by Katie and Micah who are haunted by supernatural presence in the house and use a home camera to prove this.

The couple Katie and Micah are the two main characters along with the supernatural presence in the house.

Paranormal activity is different to a lot of horror/thriller films as it is done as a documentary style done on a home camera; many of the shots are done from the point of view of the person holding the camera or as a person speaking into the camera to tell the viewer something that has happened. An example is when they are holding the camera and filming going into the loft sequence as you can see it from the point of view. A lot of the shots are wide shots when they leave the camera on when they are sleeping.

The music is used in a typical horror film way by being in one location and then hearing a scream from a different part of the house as an example or hearing noises and doors creaking etc.

Binary oppositions in this film is the typical light vs. dark and hot vs. cold these are used in various places in the film. An example being when the girl has being doing mysterious things and Micah finds her outside it is freezing compared to the warmth of the house.

All horror films have a monster this is the paradigms of the film, in this film the paradigms is ‘the supernatural presence’ this ends up taking over the girl Katie at the end of the film. The film starts off with odd things like the door closing and noises and then things like footsteps appear and things begin to develop.

Research: Theriosts

THERIOSTS: HOW LEVI – STRAUSS IS USED IN HORROR FILMS

Claude LĂ©vi-Strauss (28 November 1908 – 30 October 2009) was a French anthropologist and ethnologist, and has been called the "father of modern anthropology".
He believed a critical theory, binary opposition, as a pair of terms or concepts that are theoretical opposites. For example in the film industry, effects in films such as lighting and setting, and in some cases temperature shown throughout the film, are used as the audiences expectations will remain the same watching any film. Therefore in horror films, to create tension and allow the audience to become scared, simple characters that make up a film, are challenged.

  • Lighting - audiences believe, that bad and scary things happen in the dark, due to the unknown, however if the same street that was shot in the dark, with shadows and eerie noises, was actually shot in bright light, it would create a different mood entirely for the audience.
For example; in the film Psycho, Hitchcock plays with the audiences expectations of oppositional factors. The brightest and lightest part in the whole film, is Marian in the shower, this enables the audience to relax, as the light is bright giving a sense that everything is now calm and nothing is going to happen. However, this is the part, where she dies, it makes the audience jump, due to it being unexpected and also due to fact that the audience has relaxed it seems worse that it actually is.

  • Setting – the setting of a film or a specific shot is vital, however, some films use, especially in horror films, to cause the audience to become scared. Audiences are more likely to expect something, such as a murder to happen in perhaps the wilderness, where it is dark, nobody is around – not in a location where people are always around and normally the lighting is good and bright.
For example; in the film A Nightmare of Elms Street, the setting of the killing actually happens in a town – this is unexpected as audience would not expect it to happen in a town. This then creates, once again the audience to relax, as when the film shows a town and bright lighting with people surrounding, the audience relax as, and they feel it is unlikely anything is going to happen. So, then, when the murder actually happens, they again become more scared, as they have relaxed due to what they expect is going to happen.

  • Temperature – temperature is used, like other film elements, to create a sense of unnaturalness. The use of temperature, such as a cold and icy atmosphere, again creates a sense of the scariness and the wilderness. So, film makers wanting to relax the audience, will create a shot of a pleasant warm atmosphere, to relax the audience before the scary part, in which they wish to make the audience scared.
Another example; is in the film The exorcist, the setting for the film is a house. As the devil, approaches the girls, the temperature of the room is shown as cold, icy and unpleasant. However, the rest of the house, that we see before the devil approaches the girls room, is warm, pleasant and homely. Using this creates the unexpected, as the house is homely and warm, we again relax and the shot were he then approaches the room, that is cold an icy, becomes scarier as the audience have relaxed.

    GENRE – REPETOIRE OF ELEMENTS

Films, involve a set of conventions that are associated with the genre.

Within most films, the repertoire of elements consists in the following:
  • Mise en Scene and Settings
Mise en scene is a French term meaning what is put into a scene or frame. It is made up of visual information in front of the camera communicating essential information to the audience about setting (time & place) and characters. Each aspect of mise-en-scene creates meanings and communicates them to the audience, influencing how we are feel at a certain point throughout a film.
Mise en scene is made up of 5 elements:
    - Settings & Props
    - Costume, Hair & Make Up
    - Facial Expressions & Body Language
    - Lighting & Colour
    - Positioning of characters/objects within the frame
    http://www.slideshare.net/mediamonkeyslides/mise-en-scene-5427491
  • Settings & Props
Settings & Locations play an important part in film-making and are not just ‘backgrounds’. Sets are either built from scratch or a great deal of time is spent to find a setting which already exists. Settings can manipulate an audience by building certain expectations and then taking a different turn.
Within a horror film, audiences expect certain settings where the scariest part of the film is meant to happen. Dark woods and the wilderness are expected settings where audiences are meant to be scared.
In terms of props, there are obvious props that films use, that create blood and make noise, to scare the audience. For example; knives, axes and sharp implements.
  • Narratives - Structure & Type

Todorovian Structure – is a structure believed that in any narrative it begins with two opposing forces. In horror films, the forces are good and evil.

Typical structure that a horror film follows is the opposing forces will come together in a disruption of the initial equilibrium. The quest is likely to involve, violence, gore and fear. And conventionally ends with the triumph of good over evil, however some directors choose to subvert the conventions and evil triumphs good.
  • Characters - Familiar Character Types

Horror films have features, such as the characters that they include within the film, that make it easier to identify what genre the film is. Typical characters include, monsters and victims – good versus evil.
Within the early days of films, it was inhuman monsters that were portrayed as evil; however as time progressed monsters became more human like, which creates a more realistic and scary feel. Victims, were normally portrayed as princesses, very venerable characters, however as time has progressed, characters have developed and the victims are portrayed as all types of characters.
  • Lighting & Sound

Lighting plays a massive part in films, as well as setting the scene, it is used to control the audience, as it causes them to relax and also become tense due to the lighting.

Dark lighting is believed to be the place where bad and scary things happen, due to the unknown, however shots in bright light, create a different mood entirely for the audience, enabling them to relax as they don’t expect anything bad to happen.
  • Names

Certain directors are well known for directing a certain genre of film, for example; Wes Craven directed Scream, so when his name is mentioned in future, people immediately know that the film is within the scary genre.

Actors are well known for working within a certain genre of film. For example; Hugh Grant, is well known for appearing in romantic comedy films, such as Bridget Jones, About a Boy and Love Actually, audiences would not expect to see him in action films. However, someone like Sylvester Stallone, appears in a lot in action films, such as Rambo so when choosing to watch a film, and knowing that he is appearing in the film, we can immediately tell that the film is going to be of an action genre.

Our group researched five trailers; Case 39, Paranormal Activity 2, Devil, The Last Exorcism and Saw 3D.

Case 39 is a 2009 horror film, set in 2006. It is a film very much aimed around a typical life situation, of a social workers life, however in the film, she becomes very attached to her client and in the end the little girl she is assigned to goes to stay with Renee Zellweger.
It follows the typical horror genre characteristics with the use of sound, as throughout the whole trailer, the music is very eerie and scary, so immediately the audience can tell that the film is of a horror genre.
Lighting is used very cleverly in the trailer, as audience expect in the dark the bad things are happening however in some shots within the trailer, the lighting is dark outside but lights are on in the rooms, for example when the bugs are crawling on the mans back.

Paranormal Activity 2 is a 2010 film, which is filmed in the way of a documentary, using images that look almost like they are CCTV images. The lighting throughout the documentary is very dark and mysterious, and in some cases the shots are portrayed to be going in and out of focus, which again gives a sense of horror again.

Devil is a 2010 supernatural thriller. It is mainly filmed in a lift, in which the main event happens. The lighting is very forced, and only at times is natural light used in shots, as most of the shots are shot from inside the li8ft, using artificial light. The use of fade to black within shots and the use of writing, also adds to the sense of horror. The lighting follows the rules in this specific trailer, as bad things happen, in the dark, and nothing bad as such seems to happen in the bright light.

The Last Exorcism is horror film, based on a true story. The main parts of the film that are the scariest tend to happen in the dark. The music and props seem to match and add to the horror genre.

Saw 3D is a mystery horror film, creating tension by the unknown, of how characters will be killed and if they will be killed. It uses words and phrases to create tension and scariness. This trailer, again follows the rules, bad things seem to be happening in the dark, however a few traumatic parts of the film, happen in bright light, which is unexpected, as the audience do not expect this to happen.

Planning: Location Shots

LOCATION SHOTS

Corridor photos: These shots create the illusion of a never-ending corridor; this enables us to play with the shot, with zooms, or creating characters in our trailer to appear at the end of the corridor for a brief moment, to create an intense and scary feel once again.

Stair photos: These photos create patterns and interesting images, which allow us to play with them when shooting the trailer. The railings on the stairs make the stairs look more interesting, so when shooting the trailer this comes across as well.

Door photos: These photos don’t show in the photo, what we could do when shooting the shot within the trailer. Using doors, allows us, to create interesting shots, by using door handles and padlocks and zooming in and out to create a feel of not being able to escape due to the doors being locked for example.

Planning: Target Audience

TARGET AUDIENCE

The target audience of our film is 18-25, this is mainly because the film is rated 18 so the viewer should be over this age to view. We have decided to choose this target audience because we feel that the storyline, setting etc is most effective for this age range of people.

On a cinema network website that has statistics of cinema goings in age 18-24 was one of the highest age groups of cinema goings. It also showed that the same range of these people who are at or going to university were also a high percentage of cinema goers.

The target audience of this film in terms of social status is middle class to working class (A, B, C1&C2) as this film is most appealing to this type of person; as the research we have done have shown these type of people will be at this type of institute (e.g. school) so more likely to relate to this type of person. When looking at the horror movie age profile 18-24 came out as the biggest percentage in the horror movie genre.

This film targets this audience because of the actors and characters in it as in the film it is set in a institute/ office block and is in corridors etc and the target audience are people who go to this type of institutes so they will relate they can relate to the actors and characters as they know what they feel like in these locations

AGENDA

MONDAY 11TH OCTOBER 2010

MEDIA – GREEN ROOM
  • Apologies

Mr Garner is unable to be present for the meeting, due to a teaching course in London.

  • Where are we in terms of the Schedule?

The group s very up to date with the schedule, however last Tuesday shooting had to stop due to Sophie Faulkner not wearing the same clothing, so to enable the film to look professional and as if it was happening within a time period with no breaks, we decided to postpone shooting in order for Sophie to wear the correct clothing.

  • Problems – any illness/weather or technical issues

The camera battery ran out during filming, we had to stop filming for a period of time, while the battery recharged.
Filming also did not happen on Thursday 16th November due to weather conditions, preventing some of the group members not able to attend school, so the filming will now commence on Wednesday 22nnd November, as well as other shots to keep us on schedule.

  • Solutions and Suggestions

Ensure battery and equipment is ready, the evening before to prevent time being wasted in the morning and filming can immediately commence.

  • Any other Business (AOB)

Make sure Sophie Falkner wears the same outfit, on every set day for filming, in case shots that need re doing have to be shot.

Evaluation

Feedback:

After we completed our trailer we showed it to various people to get the feedback and opinion and things that could be done to make it better.

The people we asked initial opinions included that it was very good and they had lots of questions; e.g. whets behind the door? They also said that they would go to the cinema to see after and as there were many enigmas left once the trailer finished. They easily identified the genre as a horror and this was easily found out. They also said that general improvements would be to see more of the stalker and to see more incidents happen to the girl such as fall over.

Questions:

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our media product uses the forms and conventions of the horror thriller genre as in our trailer we have added the usual tension and suspense leading up to the finale of our trailer which usually has the outburst of horror as keeping the suspense throughout the trailer keeps the audience captivated within the trailer.
Our trailer challenges the forms of horror thriller trailers as we use ideas of repetition, although it does relate to the story of what is it happening and it doesn't give too much away as to what will happen in the film. Usual horror thriller trailers involve many clips of different scenes, so there are different clips of what is happening to different characters in the film, but we don’t always know why these things are happening to them, hence the name teaser trailer. Some parts of our trailer is the same as others with the dark contrast in certain clips and the way the pace picks up throughout as the tension begins to build up leading to the final end of the horror.

3. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

The poster we have made for our film has a dark contrast and has an image of a character from our film. We have used the same image for our magazine cover also as it doesn't give too much away about the film and makes the audience intrigued to watch more so they can find out what happens.
We have used same font colour for the title of our film on the magazine cover and poster but we haven’t used the same font. The rest of the font colour on the magazine cover is in yellow, we have done this so that our trailer title stands out the most and it makes it more obvious to the reader that the image being used links to the “Exclusive” for our trailer.
The image is the same making it obvious that they both link together.
There is a link to a website giving you more information about our film, but the website isn’t the name of our film but instead is the date which the film will be coming out so it doesn’t give away too much information away about the film.
People can easily tell that the Magazine cover is related to the poster as we have used the same image and the same colours for our text
Overall it is a good combination but the difference of fonts could be changed to improve our product and make it look more professional.

3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?

From the audience feedback we have a positive outlook as many of the comments were that the trailer was really good or improvements which are helpful so that we know what would be needed to improve it; more of the stalker or an incident to happen to the girl. Some of the responses were that they like particular shots; an example was of a shot where it looked like the running girl was holding the camera creating a point of view shot to make the audience feel like they are in the shot. They also liked the shot where it is at a low angle going slowly past a door that has a shadow. Another comment was that they liked the way the trailer had been edited to make it darker etc by changing the brightness and the contrast of the picture as this impacted to the atmosphere of the trailer. All the people who viewed the trailer were in our target audience of 18-25 so we knew it was a successful as our target audience enjoyed the trailer and would go to see the film.

4. How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

We had to start by using the Internet for our initial research to decide on our genre and help us get ideas about a story line. On the Internet we used Google as our search engine, the things we searched for included, details on the horror genre and films of the same genre. Once our initial decision had been made we had to do further research and look at similar trailers to get an idea of what our trailer needs to include and the repertoire of elements; to do this we had to use YouTube on the Internet. The next thing to do was start planning we had to decide on what was going to be included in the trailer and characters, setting and what shots we were going to include as well as taking still camera shots using a compact digital camera of the locations we were going to use to create the trailer. We had to do our storyboard so we knew what shots we needed and the order it was going to do, as well as creating a paper version of our storyboard we then took still images with our digital camera and made it into a movie on windows movie maker as well as doing a time plan so we knew what time we had allocated for each part of filming this was done in Microsoft word.. Once our planning stage were completed we had to move onto the filming process, we put the shots into categories; head, running, stairs etc, to do this we had to use a mini DV camera. To keep in contact with each using our mobile telephones as well as email to make sure everyone had a copy of the time plan etc so everyone knew where we were and the time and date. Once we began filming we ended up coming up with more shots that worked better than some of the shots we planned. The final stage was to capture, edit the clips together and add titles, effects and cut clips down. We first had to capture all the clips we wanted to use by watching it back. Once all the clips were captured we had to use Canopus Storm as our software for editing we then began piecing them all together, we followed our storyboard but had to add in titles and effects to make it work together and cut down clips as well as swapping some of the original clips with other ones we had came up with when filming. For the evaluation we had to use a TV that was connected to the computer to allow us to show our trailer to people so we could get feedback to allows us to do our evaluation, to contact the people we had to use email and text so they knew what we needed them for and the time and date. We also had to use the work from our target audience to make sure we chose the appropriate people.
